Outdoor furniture made of poly is sweeping the nation.
What is poly made of?
Poly is made from primarily virgin resins and is 100% recyclable. This alternative lumber is also known as high-density polyethylene or HDPE. The main component that makes up HDPE is sourced from used plastics such as bottles, milk and soap jugs, and other post-consumer containers. Before any of these materials can be compounded into what we know as poly, it has to be sifted and decontaminated. The process the recycled materials go through removes food residue, adhesives, and even paper remnants.
The great thing about poly is that it is not painted or coated. During manufacturing, a pigment is mixed into the plastic to make a vibrant color that is easy to maintain.
An effort to a cleaner Earth
Creating furniture out of recycled material has become a popular method of preventing more plastics from reaching landfills and oceans. Plastics degrade at a frighteningly slow rate. We would much rather have long-lasting furniture than long-lasting trash and contaminated waters.
The increase we are seeing of poly furniture could also be a preventative step of over-harvesting forests. While it is healthy for trees to be harvested to prevent storm debris and forest fires, it must be regulated so that the ecosystem can still thrive. Using alternative materials instead of wood is a great step in that direction. HDPE can also continue to be recycled for continued use.
